Kenawa Island
Kenawa Island

You know how the island goes, it is where the sea meets the savanna, I bet, Kenawa Island is going to be one of your most beautiful hidden island you will visit this year. This neighboring island of Lombok situated in West Sumbawa. Kenawa is small and uninhabited island is located in the Gili Balu archipelago. Covering around 13 hectares, the island offers breathtaking nature, calm beaches, and unique experiences that are perfect for adventure lovers and peaceful getaways.

What Makes Kenawa Island different from others?

From the moment you arrive at Kenawa Island, you’ll be amazed by its white sandy beaches, clear blue sea, and wide savanna. The savanna changes color depending on the season—it turns green in the rainy season and golden brown in the dry season. There are also several small huts where you can relax and enjoy the view.

Although Kenawa Island is not inhabited, dont worry, some basic facilities like toilets, a prayer room (mushola), small food stalls, a wooden jetty, and places to rent snorkeling gear. Still, there is no fresh water on the island, so it’s important to bring your own drinking water and snacks.

5 Best Things to Do on Kenawa Island

Here are five must-try activities when visiting Kenawa Island:

1. Camping Under the Stars

Camping on Kenawa Island is one of the thing you can try, and it is a magical experience. At night, you can lie down on the soft grass of the savanna, feel the cool breeze, and watch the stars light up the sky. It’s a peaceful escape from the busy city life.

The best time to set up your tent is in the late afternoon. That way, you can avoid the hot sun and enjoy the beautiful sunset. Be sure to bring enough food, water, and other camping needs. There is a small food stall on the island, but prices are higher than usual. You can also charge your phone for about IDR 10,000 per device at the stall.

One important rule to follow: campfires are not allowed, as the dry savanna grass is very easy to burn.

2. Watch the Sunrise from the Hill

Waking up early is worth it on Kenawa Island. Around 5 or 6 AM, you can hike to the top of a hill in the middle of the island. The hike takes about 15 minutes. From the top, you’ll see the sun rise slowly over the calm sea, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink.

Bring your camera or phone to capture the magical moment. The view is unforgettable!

3. Climb the Hill for a Panoramic View

Even during the day, climbing the hill in the center of Kenawa Island is a fun and rewarding activity. The hill is about 80 meters high, and the hike is short but a bit steep, with an angle of about 60 degrees. The path can be slippery due to loose stones, so wear proper shoes and be careful.

From the top, you’ll see the entire island, surrounded by the bright blue sea, green mangrove forests, fishing boats, and other small hills nearby. It’s one of the best spots for photos and videos.

4. Snorkeling in Clear Waters

You can rent snorkeling equipment on the island for around IDR 25,000–30,000. No need for a life jacket if you’re comfortable in the water. The underwater scenery is beautiful, and you’ll get to see marine life up close.

5. Capture the Moment

Kenawa Island is full of breathtaking scenery that naturally invites you to take out your camera or phone. With white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and sweeping views of green or golden savanna, it’s hard to resist capturing a few memories.

Many people enjoy dressing up a little for casual photo sessions, making the most of the island’s dreamy backdrops. The tall grass and wild landscapes often feel like scenes from a fairytale. Whether you’re snapping a few shots for yourself or creating content to share, the island offers plenty of quiet, beautiful spots to do so.

How to Get to Kenawa Island

To reach Kenawa Island, travelers must take two boat rides. First, take a ferry from Kayangan Port in East Lombok to Poto Tano Port in West Sumbawa. The ferry trip takes about 1 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Poto Tano, walk for about 15 minutes to a nearby small fishing port. From there, you can hire a boat to Kenawa Island. The boat ride takes around 20–25 minutes depending on the weather.

The boat rental costs around IDR 300,000–400,000 (return trip) and can fit 10–15 people, so it’s best to go with a group and share the cost. There is no entrance fee to the island, but you might be charged a small fee for using certain facilities.

Where to Stay Near Kenawa Island

Since the island has no hotels or houses, you can either camp overnight or stay at accommodations nearby in West Sumbawa. Some popular choices include:

  • Wales and Waves Beach Resort – A beachfront stay with full facilities.
  • Home Stay Sollo-Sollo – Comfortable and budget-friendly.
  • Other local guesthouses and homestays can also be found through hotel booking apps or websites.

If you prefer not to camp, staying nearby and taking a day trip to the island is a good option.

Tips for Visiting Kenawa Island

  • Bring enough drinking water and snacks.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for hiking.
  • Use sunblock and wear a hat—there’s little shade on the island.
  • Come in a group to share the cost of the boat ride.
  • Bring a camera or smartphone for photos.
  • Keep the island clean and take your trash back with you.
