Yes, there are several practical transport options for getting around Lombok, from hiring private driver to renting a scooter or hiring a private driver. Or, in short distance, walking is ideal for exploring areas such as Kuta Mandalika or Senggigi, while longer distances are best covered by car.

What you need to know, Lombok is less crowded than Bali, so a little stress free as there are no traffic jams. But, travel times can be longer, especially when heading to remote beaches, waterfalls, or mountain regions. So, here are several thing you need to know to get around Lombok.

How to Get Around in Lombok: Transport Options

1. Hire a Private Driver

We can say, if you need simple and stress free travel, you can alway hiring a private car with a driver. This is one of the best ways to explore Lombok, especially for day trips or multi-stop itineraries. Prices usually start from around 700,000 IDR for 8–10 hours.

Private drivers are ideal for visiting places such as:

  • Sembalun
  • Tetebatu
  • Benang Stokel Waterfall
  • Selong Belanak Beach

Most drivers are arranged through hotels or via WhatsApp and often double as informal guides, sharing local knowledge along the way.

2. Take a Taxi

Conventional taxis are available in Lombok, though they are less common than in Bali. Bluebird Group taxis operate mainly in Mataram and Senggigi and are considered reliable option.

Taxis are useful if you don’t have mobile data or prefer not to ride a scooter. Always make sure the meter is used, or agree on a fare before starting the trip if the taxi is non-metered.

3. Explore on Foot

Walking works best in compact tourist areas such as Kuta Mandalika, Senggigi, and parts of Gili islands. These areas have cafes, beaches, surf shops, and accommodations close together.

Outside of town centres, Lombok is not particularly pedestrian-friendly. Sidewalks are limited, roads can be narrow, and distances between attractions are often far. Comfortable footwear and sun protection are essential if you plan to walk frequently.

4. Book a Rideshare Service (Grab or Gojek)

Grab and Gojek do operate in Lombok, but their availability is limited and inconsistent compared to larger destinations like Bali. In practice, these rideshare apps work most reliably around Mataram, particularly in urban areas and along main roads. Outside of the city, coverage becomes much more restricted.

Most local trips cost under 50,000 IDR, making it also affordable and practical. Scooter rides via Gojek or GrabBike are especially popular for short trips around town.

Do note that rideshare availability is limited in more rural areas such as Sembalun, Tetebatu, or the northern coast. In these places, alternative transport is required.

5. Rent a Scooter

Renting a scooter is popular in Lombok and costs around 80,000–100,000 IDR per day. Scooters are best suited for experienced riders, as road conditions can vary significantly.

Scooters are ideal for:

  • Short distances around Kuta Mandalika
  • Coastal roads in Senggigi
  • Village roads in Tetebatu

Always wear a helmet, carry an international driving permit, and make sure your travel insurance covers scooter riding. Riding responsibly is not only about personal safety, but also about showing respect to the local community. Reckless behaviour, loud riding, or riding without safety gear can attract unwanted attention and reflects poorly. By following the rules, riding calmly, and being mindful of others on the road, you help keep yourself, and everyone around you safe.

6. Hire a Car (Self-Drive)

Renting a car without a driver is possible in Lombok for travellers with an international driving licence. Prices range from 200,000 to 500,000 IDR per day.

This option suits confident drivers planning to explore remote areas independently, though road conditions and signage can be challenging outside main routes.

Getting Around from Lombok International Airport

Lombok International Airport is located in central Lombok.

Transport options include:

  • Hotel transfers (often arranged in advance)
  • Taxis or private drivers
  • Grab or Gojek (limited availability)

Approximate travel times:

  • Airport to Kuta Mandalika: 25–35 minutes
  • Airport to Senggigi: 1.5–2 hours
  • Airport to Mataram: 45–60 minutes

Is Lombok Safe to Travel Around?

Yes, Lombok is generally considered safe for travellers, but safety largely depends on how you move around the island and how aware you are of your surroundings. Most travel-related risks in Lombok are not linked to personal security, but rather to road conditions, transportation choices, and unfamiliar environments.

Road safety is the primary concern, especially if you choose to ride scooters. What we can say is you need to be extra cautious. We are strongly advised when riding at night. Street lighting is limited in many parts of Lombok, including coastal and rural areas, and visibility can drop quickly after sunset. If you are unfamiliar with the route, riding after dark increases the risk of accidents due to poor lighting, unexpected obstacles, and limited roadside assistance. For this reason, it is best to finish longer journeys before sunset whenever possible.

Respecting local customs is another important part of staying safe and avoiding uncomfortable situations. In villages and residential areas, ride slowly and quietly, dress modestly, and be courteous to locals.

Weather conditions should also be taken seriously. Heavy rain can make roads slippery and reduce visibility, especially on hilly or coastal routes. If conditions worsen, it is safer to stop and wait rather than push on.

Overall, Lombok rewards travellers who move carefully, plan ahead, and understand their own limits. Choosing the right transport, avoiding unnecessary risks, and staying alert at all times will help ensure a safer and more enjoyable experience while exploring the island.

Flights to Lombok

Now that you know how to get around Lombok, it’s time to plan your trip.

There are direct flights to Lombok International Airport from:

  • Jakarta
  • Surabaya
  • Bali
  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Singapore (seasonal)

Lombok is also easily reached from Bali by fast boat or ferry, making it a perfect extension to an Indonesian island journey.
